I have set my site (www.bradwellcruisingclub.co.uk) to supply a favorites
icon to a browser that bookmarks the site.

All seems to work OK with the browser first time around, but then the
browser 'loses' the icon and reverts to the default Explorer 'e'. Any idea
why?

The browser is IE 6.0.2900 running under XP Pro. Both are kept up to date
automatically.

I wish I knew, but favicons have always exhibited that kind of behavior for
me.

They will disappear when you clear your IE temporary internet files because that is where
IE stores the icon file.

Hi Steve,
I'm having the same problem and 2 questions --- how should I and the rest people who
already got their Favicon's must do to correctly get back their Favicon's permanently
in their PC's. I knew we all did tried BUT it never come back.

2nd question: Is there a ready made JavaScript code that ask our URL and site name and
when people click that Icon conspicuously placed in our sites will instantly place a
Favicon right in their desktop --- so no more worry of losing?

It's not anything that you can do with your web page / web site.

The only way to make it come back is to remove the link from favorites, or anywhere else
it exists on your machine and then clear the browser history and cache files.

Then open the site and add it to favorites again.
However if you want it to stay permanent, you'll need to save the icon file in a different
location on your hard drive.
Then right click your shortcut, select properties and then change the icon to the saved
one.

It violates cross domain security.
The domains being the browser domain and the operating system domain.

Regarding my 2nd query: How about using Cookies? I know it's allowed and I should
change my suggestion to Cookies. There're all the same things BUT mine is considered a
less evil because it JUST DOES A SINGLE TASK to plant a Favicon so the owner's of most
PC are more happy than theirs tons of Cookies onboard and always spying on them and
some planted Malware (Viruses included) which hijacked their PC and still nobody
care's.

Using Cookies is much better because it is invisible and instantly placed their Favicon
on desktop. Yes, it's up to each owner of PC to delete those that are not needed.

Let us hope those active Script programmers to pick-up this.

folder.
The exception is right click a web page and selecting create a shortcut.
However the favicon is still saved to the browser cache.

Create the counter image you want.
Click Save Custom Image and it should open in paint.
From Paint, save it as a .gif with any name you want. Example : mycounter.gif
Copy the .gif into your images folder.
Insert a hit counter onto your page, and select custom image.
Enter the path to the gif: example: images/mycounter.gif

Save the page and the hit counter should display the custom image when published or
previewed from an IIS based web.
