I've read around the threads in this area of Groups for a while,
specifically, becuase I want to remove Windows Messenger from my
computer with XP Home. I generally understand how to do it, but my
question is- will it affect anything important (Outlook Express,
etc)... It it worth removing? Windows Wask Manager says something on
my computer is taking up 155 mb of memory- although that could be a
bunch of programs together, I think Windows Messenger is taking up the
most memory for a usless cause (becuase I NEVER use it, and NEVER
will.)

It safe to disable the messenger, I done it and my
Outlook and other programs works fine.
All you should do is rename the file:
"c:\Program Files\Messenger\MSMSGS.EXE"
To something else like:
"c:\Program Files\Messenger\MSMSGS.EX_"
and the messenger will never be loaded to memory again.

If you can't rename the file it probably because it is
currently in your memory,
and you shoud remove it before you rename the file.
To remove the messenger from memory, enter the Task
Manager, right click on "msmsgs.exe" and select "End
Task", and then confirm that.
Now you should rename the file as I explainded above
before windows will load it into memory again.

It will affect Outlook Express, but you can prevent this from being a problem by downloading
and running the following .reg file:
http://messenger.jonathankay.com/dow...ssenger_oe.reg

Windows Messenger won't take up 155MB of memory; if you click the Processes tab you can see
exactly what's taking up the most (msmsgs.exe is the filename to Windows Messenger).

Also, Remote Assistance requires Windows Messenger to be installed, as does the Whiteboard
and Application Sharing (if you are going to use MSN Messenger).

Otherwise, it's safe to remove using the following method:

I want to remove Windows Messenger(4.7) from my PC ( i got
XP like you) but this ones factory installed and doesn't
show up on the task bar or in add remove programs.(its
annoying because it signs on by itself in the backround)
Since you know how to remove it plz let me know

It involves going into the registry and changing some things- search
for "disable windows messenger xp" in Groups and you will instantly
find it.
