Disabling Windows Defender update notifications

Greetings,

on my Windows 2000 PC and my Windows XP laptop, and I use Microsoft
Update with automatic notification and manual download/installation.

This works fine, except I feel I receive too many Windows Defender
update notifications (i.e. several per week).

I cannot see a way of selectively disabling the Windows Defender update
notifications, either in Windows Defender itself or in Microsoft Update.

Is it possible?

Thank you.

I don't know a way to do this, I'm afraid.

That's a pity, but thanks for confirming that it isn't possible at present.

Is there a place where one could suggest it as an option that might be
worth considering?

Thank you.

This is the place, I believe. I've seen at least one other similar
request--essentially, that these updates be made part of a different class
of updates that can be treated differently. I don't know what work would be
needed to make this possible, but it sounds substantial to me.

Hi Bill,

thanks for your further feedback.

I'm not familiar with the finer details of Microsoft Update, but
wouldn't it (simply?) be a question of adding Windows Defender to the
optional software category so that it becomes user-selectable under
"Custom" updates?

I suspect that would prevent it from being automatically installed as a
critical update, which is the choice that I suspect the vast majority of
installations will make.

Some not too distant Ms Anti-Spyware history...
Kes wrote to us on 12/30/2005 about:

- MSAS does not catch 'tracker cookies'

And don't forget the mantra 'The Next Beta (2) will solve all these
problems'. :-)"

Haven't we been here before? LOL, Dave

For the record, I would like to point out that, apart from the update
notification issue I mentioned, Windows Defender appears to be working
flawlessly for me, both on my Windows 2000 PC and on my Windows XP laptop.
