Ever since I installed Service pack 3 and then removed it, whenever a file is
selected, a search widow appears instead of opening the window. I want to
disable this pesky search until I want to use it.

Why did you remove SP3?

Search opens when a file is opened. Find the filetype on the following
page and repair it.
Fix File Associations.
