I have hooked up my PC to my large screen tv, which works
fine, but a ballon invariably pops up on start menu
telling me that there is not enough room to dsiplay all
items on the menu, which is true since the tv screen is
somewhat squatter than a computer moniter. Is there a way
to disable this? I am a moderately advanced amateur-not
afraid of MMC or registry fixes. Would appreciate any
help with this. Thanks much in advance.

You can disable balloon tips altogether using TweakUI. Alternately, you
could just display fewer items on your Start Menu (right click on start menu
and select properties).
