Why don't you buy some more RAM and quit ****ing with the system before
you regret it?

I'm in the process of whittling down my Services list by disabling what I
safely can. Health Key and Certificate Management must be something new for
SP3. The default setting for this is Manual. I think I can safely put it
in disable mode. Anyone know what would be affected my disabling it?
Thanks,
Monica

what ever you disable
can be enabled via
safe mode.

however, you can go to
microsoft.com and query
those services to ascertain
more information on them.

Hi Monica,
A short "google search" came up with quite a few references to this, I
found these two after only about one minute and should shed a little more
light on your subject...

http://billpstudios.blogspot.com/200...an-expect.html
[Health Key and Certificate Management Service]
KMSVC.DLL
This is also found in Windows Vista. This file is the Microsoft Windows Key
Management Service, a new Windows service used in volume-licensed
environments to activate machines running Windows Vista or later versions.
You'll find more information at
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en.

and...

www.BlackViper.com:
Windows XP Service Pack 3 Services 411
Health Key and Certificate Management Service
Additional Information: New for XP in Service Pack 3.
I am unaware of any applications that use this feature.

Why would I have to enable it in safe mode? Can I not enable the same way I
disabled it, Admin. Tools/Services?

yeah, you can in normal
mode too. glad you
mentioned it.

just a habit I have to ensure
that people are reminded
about safe mode in case
any tweaking is done that
may inhibit normal windows.

incidentally, in case you
are not familiar with
the following,

you can click on
start>run>msconfig

then under the services
tab you have the option
to "hide" all microsoft
services,

leaving services that are
not critical to windows.

Thanks Tim. BlackViper is who I've used for years to reference what I
can/should or shouldn't disable. His "tweak" level of advice was to disable
it. This is for machines running Vista or later. Think I can safely
disable it. My new computer came with Vista (even tho I requested XP). I
reformatted the drive, installed XP, found XP drivers for this Vista machine
and then installed SP3. IOW, I'm avoiding Vista I'll check out the
other links too.
