Disabling display of inactive network adapter icons on the taskbar

After unchecking the "Show icon in the notification area when
connected" the icon for an NIC thats not connected still shows up. How

is this disabled?

Find the NIC in the Network connections, right-click, click Disable.
You can always go back and enable it if you ever want to use it.
