Disabling Broadband Connection

I have a broadband connection, and I don't like to leave it connected when I'm not using it. So, I have gotten in the habit of disabling my Network connection when I leave my computer. Recently, when I try to do this, I receive an error message: "It is not possible to disable the connection at this time. This connection may be using one or more protocols that do not support Plug-and-Play, or it may have been initiated by another user or the system account." I've tried disabling all the items the connection uses (Client for Microsoft Networks, File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks, and Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)), and true this does disable the interet access, but I am still curious as to why I can't disable the connect altogether. Anyone have any bright ideas?

I'm not sure why you do this, I'm assuming it's for security. Why not use
ZoneAlarm? (There's a free version.) You can block access, with a
mouse-click, in and out, whenever you want .
