Disabling automatic hardware detection

I have new drivers for my video card. The installation
instructions tell me that I must completely uninstall all
existing drivers, restart my computer, and install the
new ones.

Unfortunately, every time XP starts up, it detects my
video card and re-installs the old drivers. I was going
to temporarily disable Plug&Play in Services, but it said
that doing so would cause 'system instability.' Should I
disable it anyway, or is there a better course of action?

Remove old drivers and re-boot.
Just after the BIOS screen ends, before Windows XP starts to boot, press F8.
You should get the Start-up Menu.
Use the VGA boot option.
Windows XP should now boot with standard Windows drivers.
You can now install the updated rivers.

Martin.
