Does it work in Word 2007?

Do you have a custom dictionary added to your proofing settings?

Tools-> Options-> tab Mail Format-> Editor Options...-> section Proofing->
button Custom Dictionaries

Make sure that there is at least one configured. By default you should have
at least CUSTOM.DIC added there.
If it is added there, remove it and add a new one. See if it works now.
