Hi,
I am still at war with this resource conflict between my ATI Rage128 and
a shortage of free resources. It is preventing me from installing the ATI.
"Use automatic settings" is ticked and greyed out in device
manager................how do I undo this situation. This is a battle to the
death and I dont plan to go just yet. John

Apparently there is no conflict despite your perception. Under NT-based
Windows, hardware is allowed to share an interrupt. What is *it* that
prevents you from installing the ATI video card? Does the system
actually work with the ATI video card installed? Or is it just you
trying to get it to use a non-shared interrupt? With the ACPI (Advanced
Configuration and Power Interface) HAL (Hardware Abstract Layer), you
don't get to assign resources until there is a problem with a device
(and sharing an interrupt is not a conflict). You will have to revert
to the standard HAL to let you change the resources used by a device
even when there is no conflict rather than having them automatically
assigned.

Which HAL employed in Windows depends on how your BIOS was configured
when you installed the OS. If the BIOS was configured to enable ACPI
then the ACPI HAL gets installed. If the BIOS was configured to use a
non-ACPI or standard setup then the standard HAL gets installed.
Changing your BIOS from ACPI to non-ACPI when ACPI was used when
installing the OS can result in instability of the OS and cause
problems; the OS may not even boot if it installed the ACPI HAL and then
you disable ACPI in the BIOS. See the following KB articles:

What has happened is as follows.

1)W98 installed and ATI card installed trouble free.
2)W98 refuses to identigfy and install 56k modem.
3)Installed Win2000 and modem works fine.
4)ATI card installs but has a problem in device manager.
5)Error is as follows "This device cannot find enough free resources that
it can use.
If you want to use this device you will need to disable one or more devices
on this system.

The card will only allow 16color under Win 2000, under win 98 it allows
32bit color at 1076 by 800?. I have a choice of no modem or crappy graphics.

Sounds like the modem won't share its IRQ. Have you tried to disable
the modem in Device Manager, reboot, and reinstall the drivers for the
ATI video card? If you just delete the modem then it gets detected
again on the next reboot, so disable it instead. If you get the ATI
card working, then delete the modem and reboot to redetect it and
reinstall it drivers, if needed.

It appears you already had a hardware conflict and then "upgraded"
Windows 98 to Windows 2000 while carrying along the unresolved conflict.
Personally I prefer to do fresh install of operating systems, especially
when they are dissimilar operating systems (just because the GUIs have
some similarity doesn't mean NT-based Windows is really an "upgrade" to
95-based Windows; NT-based Windows is a *replacement* and different OS).
