How do you grey out or disable the Shut Down button on the Windows
Security dialog box, the one that pops up when you press Ctrl+Alt+Del?
Setting various registry keys, I've been able to grey out every button
except Shut Down and Cancel. Anyone out there know what key this is?
I've tried various things like the NoClose key. I tried using the
Group Policy editor to remove the user's group from those with
permission to shut down the system, but that doesn't work because now
the user can't shut down the system from within the custom shell I
made for the OS. Using Minlogon is not an option, I need to use the
standard Winlogon component. Anyone know how to disable/grey out the
Shut Down button? Or better yet, anyone know of a free or commercial
GINA DLL that can trap the Ctrl+Alt+Del key sequence? I don't have
enough time to write my own, or, if you know how to write a bare bones
one to trap Ctrl+Alt+Del, that would be really nice too. Anyone???

Thanks,

-Mark

Hello Mark,

you can use Resource Hacker to modify msgina.dll.
But remember! The file is copyrighted by Microsoft.

Hello Stefan,

what does it exactly mean that the file ist copyrighted by Microsoft?
I know that I may not redistribute the modified file. But is it
legally allowed to modify msgina.dll and use ist in the Windows XP
embedded used by my company?

Best regards
Susanne

Modifying msgina.dll mean hacking it. This is illegal.

You have msgina source stub files available so you can modify them (more
programming from scratch than modifying), and compile your custom dll, that
you can use. This is how it is meant to be used with regular XP, so this
apply to the XPE as well.

Best regards,
Slobodan

Hello,

Slobodan, I found the ginastub.dll on xpefiles.com, and it was exactly
what I needed! I was able to then intercept the Ctrl+Alt+Del SAS and
all is now well, no need to do any illegal hacking. Thanks to the
person who did all the real work for me...I was able to do this in a
couple hours and move on with all the rest of the stuff on my TODO
list.
