How to disable resolution stretch on wide monitor

Hello,

I have a laptop with a 15.4" monitor that I keep at a 1280x800 resolution.
If I want to have a 1024x768 res (as a lot of games don't support wide screen resolutions), the desktop stretches to cover the width of the whole screen, which gives an unpleasant widening effect.

Would someone know how to disable the stretching option? I found an option in BIOS related to that and it works to disable stretching, but only in DOS before Windows is loaded. The display is centered leaving the margins black, but as soon as Windows loads, the display stretches.

Thank you for your help!
