We have the following situation: We have a Windows 2008 server and Windows XP
Sp3 workstations. All works fine except that we have problems with the
offline files in Windows XP. All users have a home directory that is
redirected to the network. However every time a users logs in, or out of the
network, the offline files are going to syncronize. We have tried all kind of
setting in the policy's to disable the offline files but noting works. All
users can do the configuration by themself but thats not the way I think (to
many users). So I'm looking for a sollution. Does anybody know a sollution
or can anybody tell me how te disable the offline files in total? It seems to
me that it is a total useless feature for normal computers so ther emust be a
way to disable it I think.

Thanks,

Marcel

Marc,

GPO

START | RUN | MMC

Add Group Policy | Browse & choose Default Domain Policy

In User Configuration | Administrative Templates | Network you will see the
Offline Files there

What I usually do is:

Set to DISABLED:

Synchronise Files when logging on
Synchronise Files when logging off
Synchronise Files when standby

Then ENABLE the setting

Do not automatically make redirected folders...

With all the Windows 2003 R2/Windows 2008 (SP1) Servers I install it works
everytime

Hi Marcel,

Offline Folders works okay for users with limited amounts of files on
laptops. For workstations with network home directories, it's a waste
of time unless your network goes down a lot.

Which settings are you making in GP? If the user "does it themselves",
does it work?

I'm leery of turning off OF without verifying first that the user data
is secure. I've had too many instances where it was turned off, all the
cached files were removed, and for some reason the user was left with
ALL their files removed. So now I take the time to make sure their data
is backed up, then remove OF.
