How to disable InstallShield's Update Manager?

Is there anyway to disable this blasted thing? (And by disable, I also
mean NO annoying icons reminding me of such). I'm on dialup, and I really
don't want it there at all - period.

From what I've heard so far, it looks like maybe renaming "agent.exe" (or
deleting it, but I'd rather not) might do it, but then again, I heard upon
rebooting it might get put back. Haven't tried it yet, but I'm getting
close. :-)

Any ideas out there on how to? (and not whether I should, but just HOW to)

Why don't you uninstall that "Update Manager".

I'm asking the question in this group. If you have a problem with that, I
can't help you. And trust me, I doubt if you're in much of a position to
lecture me on researching topics, seeing is how you haven't really even been
under the hood yet, newbie. :-)

Well, it is not even listed in the Add-Remove Programs group for one thing.
However, on that page you mentioned, there is an uninstaller, and that may
be worth a shot - assuming it really is that. Thanks.

The update program usually has a Control Panel entry, often called "Software
Update". You can change the updater settings there, completely disabling
it. It usually comes along with Roxio (Sonic) burning programs. There will
usually be an entry for the updater in Add/Remove Programs, although it
isn't called "Install Shield Updater" and will be called something like
"Sonic Updater". So look again.

People who use Google Groups have pet toads.

Searching for answers in Google Groups is so much faster. I offered
it to you as a tool to use, not as an admonishment.

I guessed that maybe since you are such an XP noob, maybe you didn't
know about that group/feature.

Well, I went through the listings twice now, and no such luck (for any of
those, or anything close). However the site mentioned by the other poster
does have an uninstaller program available for download, so I might give
that a shot. I'll either go that route, or use the good ole fashioned,
"rename the exe so it can't find it anymore", approach. :-)

(or perhaps just get it out of the run key in the registry, assuming its
there)
