I don't want to update to IE7 but the icon remains in my systray. I have the
option checked to notify me when updates are available. I download and
install on my time.

MS has "deemed" that IE 7 (Internet Explorer 7) an important
"security" updates. This will always cause IE7 to show up in the
"update" icon. Hell, MS "may" force IE7 update shortly.

Try this Open the Windows Explorer and locate this path:
C:\Windows\System32\SoftwareDistributions = Delete all folders in the Right
Pane/windows and then Right click your partition and select Properties then
under General click Disk cleanUp and check all boxes.
Then Open the Update web page for MS and run it then select Custom instead
of the Express and uncheck the IE7 and check the box never show again and if
there are other security updates install them and reboot your computer you
will not have the Icon back (be sure your Anti-virus not set to check the
Automatic Updates).

Go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com > Allow the initial scan to
complete > Select CUSTOM install > Scan again > Uncheck IE7 and "hide" it >
AU now will not offer you IE7;

or...

Change your AU settings to Notify Only; When IE7 is offered, decline to
install it and "hide" it.

How to configure and use Automatic Updates in WinXP:

NB: If the installer for IE7 has already been downloaded by AU, you will
need to stop the AU service, delete the installer (and any other updates
already downloaded but not yet installed), and then restart the AU service.

(Stopping the service will take a moment) > [OK] your way out and close the
Services window.

Open the Download folder, delete its contents, then close the folder.

3. Start > Run > (type in) services.msc > [OK]

I should have mentioned that I had already installed IE7 and then went into
