Hi there,
I have a network set up between 3 machines, all XP Prof, connected to a
hub. One machine has a modem and the dial-up is set up there. Problem now
is that when the one machine boots, it calls up the dial-up and starts
dialing, although the setting on the machine with the modem is set to
"Never dial a connection".

When hitting the "Cancel"-button, it tries forever to dial. How can I
switch this off?

Do you have Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) enabled? Have a look at Network Connections in the Control Panel
Right click on the dial-up connection and select 'properties
Click on the 'Advanced' tab and see if ICS is enabled
If it is, check to see if 'Establish a dialup connection whenever a computer on my network attempts to access the internet' is enabled. If so, turn it off and see if that fixes your problem

Something on that computer is trying to access the internet on startup - check what TSRs (programs running in the background, down over next to the time indication) there are. Chances are one of them will be trying to update itself eg antivirus software, real player, quicktime task, msn messenger, AOL, and the list goes on
If you eliminate all of these obvious ones as the cause, then download and run SpyBot to remove any malicious software trying to do things you wouldn't want it to
