How do I disable the computer power button?
I want that when I press it, windows does noting.

There is no "Do Nothing" option in the Power Settings. Maybe a registry
change?

Hi Kirsten... Well being a retired EE, I'd setup the BIOS to fire up
when power is applied (Phoenix BIOS has this option for example). Then
clip one of the wires going to the power button. Although I might be
more helpful if I understood why you would want to do such a thing?

The only way to disable the pwr btn is by physical disconnecting it, but
then you would have to wonder ' how do I pwr up the sys'
So perhaps you might explain what exactly you are trying to achieve, and
why?

I work in a school an the w2k server and the computers are in the same room.
The server is on all day long and I want to prevent some student from
accidentaly (or instencionally) power it off.

Hi Kirsten... I would still use the method I had described if your BIOS
supports this. For example my two HPs have the following:

BIOS/CMOS Setup
Power
After Power Failure [Stay Off / Power On]

Selecting Power On will automatically power on the computer without
touching the power button when power is applied to the AC plug. A power
strip with the switch works well for this. And once this works,
basically clipping one wire from the power switch should work fine to
disable it.

In case I am wrong, you might need to cut both wires and then twist them
together and use any non-conducting tape (electrical tape would be nice)
or a wire nut or something. Although I doubt if they wired yous up like
that.

Another idea is to add a plate over the power switch. One can be easily
made with the option of having a little hole which one could use a paper
clip to power the computer on or off.

The best idea I like though, would be to replace the power button with a
key switch. That way the one with the key can only control it.

By the way, how old are these students? Also I know of no way to disable
the power switch through the software. Although I'll do some research
and let you know if I find something.

But that is the right answer...for a server. As for the
workstations inside the classroom, proper education and
computer etiquette might be the answer. That is, teach the
students to turn off their workstations by going through
the Start button instead of holding in the on/off button
for 4-10 seconds or turning off the surge protector, etc.
