Is there a switch somewhere that disables Autoplay, to save me having
to remember to hold down the "Shift" key?
(XP Home OEM original version)

TIA,

Try Power Toy's Tweak UI from Microsoft:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/d...powertoys.mspx
Install, run and expand as follows: 'My Computer', 'Auto Play', 'Types',
then check/uncheck the option to enable/disable this feature for drives or
removable drives.

More Detail on available features in Tweak UI:

Get the TweakUI powertoy from Microsoft's download site. Under the
"My Computer" node is an Auto-Play subnode where you can uncheck which
drives will no longer support auto-play mode.
