How can I keep it from marking a massage as read only because it shows
in the preview pane?
I thought there was a setting somewhere, but finding it, I am not.

Tools>Options>Other should contain a button for the Preview Pane. Set the

If you go to tools, options, other, reading pane, untick mark items as
read when in preview pane or extend the time to longer under that
option.
