if its not in the Startup folder, what programs are starting that use
outlook data? This includes sync software and itunes.

Outlook sends and recieves email when it is closed, and I get error messages
because it tries before my computer connects to the internet. I don't feel
safe having it always running. My system is XP with OL 2003. I don't sync
with any other program, including Messenger.

if outlook is loading halfway, then some other process is loading it. It's
not unsafe to have it always running but you need to figure out is bringing
it halfway up. What all is in your startup list?
