DirectX dxdiag settings not being saved

I'm helping a friend with a PC problem. He recently
purchased a HP Pavilion a320n PC running WinXP Home.
He's having a problem running some game software and the
fix is to turn down the "Hardware Sound Acceleration
Level" a notch using the dxdiag program. The new setting
is saved when the dxdiag program is exited, but the
original setting is restored after his PC is rebooted.
Anyone know what could be causing the new setting to be
lossed after rebooting. Any help appreciated.

Thanks.

If it is a game for a previous Windows then I would use the compatibility option. That is when you right click on the program or shortcut and go to the compatibility tab, then choose the windows the game is compatible with.
