That's a tricky one because MFC42.dll is the Microsoft Foundation Class
library and a lot of applications use it. There's no telling what will
break when you change a dynamic link library since different versions of a
dll may have different function calls, parameters, etc.
Here's what I got from DirectX Diag for DX 9.0b Retail SDK installs:
Windows XP mfc42.dll: 6.00.8665.0000
Windows 2000 mfc42.dll: 6.00.8665.0000
Windows ME mfc42.dll: 6.00.8665.0000
Windows 98 mfc42.dll: 6.00.8447.0000
