DirectX 9 Compatibility Issue

According to trying to run Need For Speed: Most Wanted on Windows Vista Home
Premium, it gives me an error saying a required DirectX file is missing,
which is D3D9 something like that, something that has to do with DirectX 9
.... and I'm running DirectX 10, I thought there was backwards compatibility?
If there is, I'd like a little help, thank you very much!

I'm not sure why you're posting this to the security newsgroup. I would
think these would be better:
microsoft.public.windows.vista.games
microsoft.public.windows.vista.music_pictures_video
