I am on my last leg here. I went to do Windows updates a few days ago and
noticed that there was an update for my ATI 9550 graphics card. I did the
update and restarted my computer. I attempted to play a game and got a
Direct3D error. I ran dxdiag and it showed that my directx was having a
general error. I attempted to re-install directx 9.0c and it too gave me
errors. I began to look on other forums for a solution. I tried the directx
buster. It wanted my original cd to copy the directx files out of my
x:\i386\driver.cab. I didn't have it. I read the batch file (the directx
buster), went to my laptop and copied the files required and put them in the
correct places on my desktop. I registered the .dlls and got errors on some
of them. I attempted to re-install the directx from the redistributal version
and now, it hangs for a second on "Initializing" and hangs again on "Copying
Files" and terminates with out errors. I then used the directx buster batch
file and edited it myself, this time deleting all the files required. My
thought was that if there weren't any files, then the installer would install
them. I have the same results from the installer as before (hanging and not
doing anything). Please tell me what I need to do. I know I can format and
re-install, but I have too much stuff on this system and would like a fix
instead of a work-around. The original problem was caused by a Microsoft
driver update, which really irritates me.

Both my desktop and laptop (the system I copied the files from) are running
XP Professional embedded SP2. All other updates are current.

I've tried all of the above in safe-mode (no networking) and in normal mode.

It's not directx 9c that is causing your woes but installing drivers for
your vid card from microsoft, people who come here often see this problem
all the time,it is best to install drivers fro the hardware mfg's site.
Here is a link for ati's download for your radeon 9550.

Download this to your hd then uninstall the catalyst in add/remove-reboot
then install the download.

P.S. once directx is installed you can't uninstall it you can only upgrade.
at the link above I perfer option #2 download drivers only, but that choice
is yours.

I already tried that. I tried all the driver solutions beforei managed to
royaly screw directx. I know that right now my directx is a severe problem.
How can I fix that?

Jeff,

You could try to install the DX 9.0c November update as it actually
does update DX 9.0c components to newer ones than in XP SP2.
