Directing Sent Messages Directly to Folders

I am a recent convert from Lotus Notes. In Lotus Notes when you clicked on
Send it provided you with the option to direct the email to a specific folder
at the time it was sent. In Outlook it appears that everything automatically
goes to the Sent folder and then you must drag it to the appropriate folder.

Is there a way to direct sent messages to the appropriate folder at the time
you send it?

Thanks

Depends. What is the 'appropriate folder'? There is, under Tools -
Options - E-mail options - Advanced e-mail options, the 'In folders other
than the Inbox, save replies with original message' option.

If when creating a new message and then sending it can I direct it at that
time to a specific folder?

No. New messages always go to the Sent Items folder, however you can set up
rules for after sending that might be able to do what you want. And, of
course, there's extensibility built into Outlook that might help you make a
custom solution, but, no, out of the box, new messages go to the sent items
folder.
