I tried to add a web cam to my laptop. It says direct x
is not installed on my pc so I downloaded direct x 9.0
and now direct x says that a file is missing d3d8thk.dll
and for me to reinstall direct x in which I have done 3
times now and it still says the same thing. Could/should
I unistall first? Don't know what else to do? I have
downloaded the latest version which is 9.0b

Sounds like a problem with the web cam software, not Windows XP. I'd
suggest you contact the support section for whatever brand it is, and see
what they have to say. Depending on in the intended operating system for
which the software was written, you may need to install using Compatibility
Mode. Details on how to do that are in Help and Support.

>I have already uninstalled the webcam and ran my dxdiag

troubleshooter and even without the web cam on there
direct x is giving me red x error saying dxdiag.exe -
unable to locate component- This application has failed
to start because d3d8thk.dll was not found. Reinstall may
fix. When running my direct x diagnostic tool it says
that file is an old version and could cause problems and
that I should reinstall directx to get the latest
version. I have done this with all running programs off.I
have also updated my video drivers just incase that had
anything to do with it. Should I try to reinstall the
camera? When I install the software to the camera it
asked me if I want to add directx should I say no?
