I have been wracking my brain trying to figure out what is preventing my
backup software from being able to write to my DVD drive. Right after I
installed some software, the DVD was made inaccessible. Today I realized
that the only new thing still on my system is Direct X. Is there a known
conflict and if so, what is the fix?

Assuming you are right about DirectX and also assuming what your Operating
System is (XP Pro/Home SP1/SP2), you could try this:

"my backup software" is what program?
"preventing ... from ... write to my DVD drive" is not the error message
that "my backup software" would display.

Visit the forums for the *unnamed* backup software to ask that user
community about the error (but you might want to actually give them the
error message for them to have something to work on). That user
community, if available and active, would be more focused and more
experienced on whatever backup program you are trying to use. If there
are no user support forums for the backup software, you could try
sending e-mail or use their web form to submit a help request.

Did you try using the burning software that came with the CD/DVD
recordable drive to see if that works (to ensure the drive still works)?
Did you check that the disc inserted was recordable or rewritable (and
was it black or partially filled)?

WinXP has no DVD writing/burning support by default. That support is
provided by third-party software only, however, there this optional
update avalable: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932716/en-us

DirectX is *not* a new thing since installed with WinXP by default. If
you have updated DirectX to the latest DX version 9.0c for WinXP, this
has nothing to do with your DVD drive.

If the DVD *media* is inaccessible, there is no fix. If the DVD *drive*
is inaccessible, repost if that drive appears correctly in the BIOS
setup, in the device manager, in "My Computer" and the exact error
message.

Dear DD,
According to Novastor, packet writing software blocks the ability for backup
software to burn to the DVD. The DVD was working perfectly until I installed
2 new pieces of software. One comes bundled with gearsec.exe, the other with
Direct X. Suddenly, Nova Backup can no longer write to the DVD. I can read
from the DVD just fine. Drag to Disc also can't write to the drive. This is
the actual error: ERROR: Backup: not opened: devopen() returned: "Couldn't
open Dynamic Device"

Yes, I have tried a number of things, and nothing is working to write to the
DVD at this point. It was working fine before I installed gearsec.exe and
Direct X. I have now updated Direct X with the 7/10 update and it still
isn't accessible. I can read from it just fine. I'm using Nova Backup and
it was working perfectly before I installed those 2 other programs.

Dear Maincat,
I did install the SP2 patch however it doesn't say anything about DVD
burning even though the link for it is on the Direct X patch page for SP1.
The patch didn't resolve the problem. Also, I installed the latest Direct X
update from 7.10 and that didn't fix it either.

Why did you download gearsec.exe separately of any other software (that
came included with the DVD drive)?

Looks like you screwed up the interdependency of the Nova Backup
program, or you are using an old version that isn't compatible with the
engine supplied in the DVD bundled software.

Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling Nova Backup to have it step
atop of whatever of its files got stepped on? While that may get Nova
Backup working, it could render the other software unusable.

AFAIK, "GearSec.exe" is a DVD&CD copy engine and may or may not have an
impact on your DVD drives. Not a Windows issue, contact the tech supports
of your third-party DVD software involved. Good luck.

Dear Vanguard,
gearsec came bundled with Serif MoviePlus. I wasn't aware it was there
until I saw it running in Task Manager. Yes, I have tried uninstalling
everything that was installed and reinstalling Nova Backup. I have also used
Kelly's tweak to restore CD burning to no avail.

I'm utterly stumped. I also tried booking with no services or start up
programs and still couldn't burn to the DVD.
