Direct cable connection causes network connection to be disrupted

I have performed a direct cable connection between my
laptop that has windows 98 loaded and my desktop with
windows XP, everytime I enable the direct connection
between the two pc's my network connection is
disconnected, why is this ? and is there a way to fix it?
