I have lost the MODEM connection feature i.e the dial-up with modem is
dimmed out on the Network connections Wizard step. What should I do to
restore this. Support from the link below does not seem to help

Try to run this:
Open a Run command and type:
sfc /scannow click [OK] and wait for it to finish, you may need to get your
XP CD handy to insert it if you prompted by the OS to do so.
Reboot and try the wizard, when you trying to install the software did you
turn your Anti-virus OFF?.
If the above didn't work for you try to provide more Info that will help us
to see the whole picture and give the right procedure, not a guess.
HTH.

assuming you've lost the modem:

External modem unplug it for awhile, Internal shut down.

Start hypertrm.exe http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q124890/ (works for
XP as well) type in the term window
ATZ <enter>
This resets the modem.
You might not see ATZ being entered but you will see an OK

Thanks for yo help so far. Let me give more Info. I had a power surge
which led to XP not starting. So I got an XP bootable CD and boted from
CD then re installed XP through the Repair Option. It finished and the
PC worked once again except two things happened

1. PC became slow when loading applications
2. When I tried to dial there was no connection. When I tried to create
a New connection for my modem and chose set up connection manually and
chose next the Connect using a dialup Modem option was Dimmed!!

I trust this add more meat now

Thanks and Regards

Don't even try (yet) to fix software. First establish hardware
integrity. Find Device Manager to learn what Windows knows about
hardware. If the computer is from a more responsible manufacturer,
then comprehensive diagnostics were provided for free both on disk and
on their web site. Otherwise download diagnostics from the modem
manufacturer.

If hardware is not working, then any attempt to fix software (or
Windows) will only complicate the problem. First establish if hardware
is working - modem and other peripherals. Further useful information
may be in system (event) logs. See Control Panel or Windows Help, if
necessary, to find these information sources.
