Hi,

Weird things would always be happened from upgrading old
version of windows to XP. I would first suggest you to
download all the latest XP compatible drivers from the
manufacturers's websites for your soundcard, vedio card,
chipset(Intel, SiS, etc) and other devices and save them
to a specific folder in the drive other then the C drive.
If your HD is not partitioned or you don't have a slave
drive, burn them to a CDR after the download. Then format
the C drive and clean install XP Pro.
After XP Pro is installed successfully, install the other
drivers in the following orders:
1. chipset drivers - reboot
2. soundcard drivers - reboot
3. display card drivers - reboot
4. USB 2.0 drivers (if any)
5. printer drivers
6. scanner drivers - reboot if required
7. internal/external modem drivers (if not auto-installed
by XP)
8. any other devices drivers
9. Reboot and install office XP or other office version.
10.Check that all your devices are working properly
before downloading windows update patches.
11. download and install SP1a if it is not included in
the XP CD
12. download and install other critical updates (not more
than 4 updates at one time.
13. After finishing all the updates, check again to
ensure all the devices work properly.
14. Install antiVirus, anti-spywares and firewall
softwares.
15. Create a new restore point by using the restore
feature. You can name it as "complete XP clean
installation" or whatever you like.
16. Install other applications one at each time and run
it to ensure there is no conflicts with each other.
17. Run disk cleanup, chkdsk and then defrag the C drive
in order to obtain maximum performance.

Hope it helps.

Peter
