A few here on comp.periphs.scanners may be interested in the proposed
project to digitally master (or some would say "remaster") the most
popular classic public domain books in the English language. A
component of this project includes archival-quality scanning of
source books, and there may be a few people here who are interested
in that.
Details of the proposed project are given in the TeleRead blog
article:
http://www.teleread.org/blog/?p=6174
There is an introductory section explaining the problem and need
(naturally it mentions Project Gutenberg and how this differs from
that), and then gets into an overview of the proposal.
Note that one has to differentiate between digitization via page
scans (to create bitmap image reproductions of the originals), and
the creation of highly structured, repurposeable digital text.
Without understanding this difference, it is easy to confuse this with
projects to scan millions of books, such as Google's.
Your feedback is appreciated. If you are interested in participating
in some capacity with the project, or to help in getting it organized
and operational, let me know in private email.
Thanks!
