I have a number of digital cameras. They are all recognized by Vista as USB
Mass Storage Devices. However my best one has stopped working correctly.
It is listed in My Computer for around a second then vanishes. It just keeps
flashing like this. Also. It is not designated a drive letter.

How can I correct this?

PteParts,

Some folks have had good luck resolving USB device recognition issues like
you have by deleting the INFCACHE.1 file, which can get corrupted with bad
data and cause issues like you have. The file is located at C:\Windows\inf.
There, scroll down to the INFCACHE.1 file and right click it and select
delete. To do this, you will likely have to give yourself permission to
delete it, because of Windows built-in security. Just right click the file,
select Properties and then
click on the security tab. Let us know whether this procedure does anything.
Sometimes it does and sometimes not. Post back on the results.

Is it by any chance a Cannon? They seem to be very prone to this.

I always pull the flash card and use a card reader. My Desktop and my
Laptop both have built in card readers and so does my HP PS8250 printer
plus I have a tiny portable one that plugs into a USB port.

Very often this gives you faster image transfer, partly because many
cameras don't have USB2 and partly because the image processing in the
camera is slower than on a PC.

Did you by any chance enable UAC prior to the malfunction?
