Hi !

I have a Canon Powershot A590 and WinXP SP3.

I want to use my digital camera like a card reader but i can't.

It dosen't appear as a removable disk but as a digital camera in windows
explorer and i can't put any files on my SD card, i can only remove the
pictures that where taken.

I have search throught the options of my camera and there is no switch to
change the communication settings...

How can i use my camera as a card reader ?

PS. I have no problem connecting other removable disk, like a usb stick, it
appears as the letter "I".

Thanks

You can't. That's NOT its purpose.

What happens when you try to put files onto the SD card? Any error messages?
Or does it simply not work, meaning the files don't appear on the card?

AND: How does your camera name the files it creates on the SD card when
you're taking pictures? For instance, my Olympus uses names like
P2110015.JPG, and it creates the numbers sequentially as more pictures are
taken.

The reason I ask is this: Let's say I have a jpg on the computer called
KITCHENSINK.JPG. If I try to copy it to the SD card, it simply does not
appear. But if I rename it so it fits the camera's naming scheme, the copy
process works. Annoying, but it works.

If you want to put "pictures" on the SD card, get a SD card reader for the
card you use. Take the card out, stick it in the reader, plug it into a USB
port and then you can drag pictures to it. Maybe videos too, but I doubt
anything else.

Do a Google search, or check on eBay. They are cheap.

No way. All Canon's digital cams have no USB Mass Storage
interface, they are WIA only.

The only way is to buy an SD card reader and put the
cam's SD card into it.

There is no error message, windows just don't let me put files in the
directory. Either by drag and drop or copy/paste.

the name of the files on the camera is a sequential number.

i can't even take the files that where on the camera and put them back.

I see the camera in windows explorer, but it is in "digital camera", when i
click on it i can see the pictures taken, drag them to a directory and erase
themĀ*. But i can't put anything on it.

I have an older camera and this camera appears as a removable disk. The
problem is that this older camera won't take SD cards larger then 2 Gb and i
want to access a 4Gb...

any suggestion is welcome...

Some cameras have an extension cord that allows the camera to be plugged
into the USB port.

A great many of cameras so equipped have been rendered useless by so doing.
This procedure is inherently dangerous.

As previously replied, you should not use digital cameras as media
slot readers. The media card can not normally be ejected with the
camera powered on. Also, the digital cameras can use a different
"format" for the media. It should be noted that most camera makers
recommend that the media cards be formatted / erased in the camera and
not in Windows.

Most multi-format card readers would have support of the xD card types
and the newer SDHC card. And these are usually "affordable."
