difficulty deleting emails, outlook 2000

I have tried every way to delete old emails. Some times it works and some
times it does not. When I delete they appear to go away; however, when I
reopen Outlook 2000 the deleted folder still contains the old emails. Other
times they are gone. When it works it is not always the procedure to delete.
Help!!
