in what situations are diffgrams used.

One example is that a diffgram is passed back as a dataset from a call to a
webservice.

You cant pass a dataset as an object easily, but an XML diffgram is very
easy to transfer as its just xml text, and any consumer can use it that
understands the diffgram format or at the lowest level can parse the text..
