Read your help files again. This is from my NT4 box, much the same
general information for other NT versions:
Hardware Profiles
You can use the Hardware Profiles feature to create and save profiles of
different computer configurations.
For example, if you are using a portable computer, you may want to
activate particular devices and services, depending on whether your
computer is docked or undocked. You can do this by using the Hardware
Profiles feature. First, create a Hardware Profile using the Systems
tool in Control Panel. Then, you can select the profile you want to
activate from the list that appears at Startup.
You can also enable or disable devices and services within a particular
profile. To do this, double-click Devices or Services in Control Panel.
A list of devices or services appears. To enable or disable a specific
device or service, click HW Profiles.
