I am planning to buy a new extra PCI cards for additional 4 USB ports.
Do I need special, new drivers to work with these ports or are these
drivers always the same as the one for the standard USB ports which
are "built-in" on the motherboards?

Are there differences in handling under Win2000 vs Windows XP?

Are there differences in handling between PCI card based additional USB ports
and PCMCIA based additional USB ports?

Mbene

No.

Don't know what you mean.

PCMCIA might be slower.

If you are currently running XP with SP2, the USB2.0 drivers are included
with the O/S.

Usually PCI cards just use the Windows standard drivers on Win2k/XP. Check
the manufacturer's web site to see if they have a driver download for the
particular product you're interested in.

No. Usually the PCI card will handle the USB ports itself. If a driver
is required, it will be shipped with the card.

No.

Usually no. If you experience problems with running a specific USB via
the card, try connecting it to one of the original USB ports.
And make sure that the USB card supports USB 2.0 if you need this.

It will often help to uninstall the original USB ports, hubs
and controllers, then install the new PCI card. When you
reboot, the hardware will be detected and the correct
drivers installed.

Windows 2000 did not handle USB 2.0 until SP4. If your new card is USB
2.0 (it almost certainly is), and you have SP4 installed, then W2K
will recognize the new hardware and install the proper drivers. If you
don't have SP4 installed, then install the drivers that come with the
card. Bear in mind that accessories that draw a lot of power from the
USB port might not work with the new card (the PCI bus won't deliver
as much power to the USB port as a motherboard would). This is
generally not a problem with USB accessories that draw power from the
mains (such as printers, scanners, etc.).
