I want to install a purchased version of xp on a friend's
computer that had 95 then they installed xp pro over the
top with an xp cd from a laptop they have. The 30 days
went by, now they can't get into window. Can we get a
new purchased copy and put that product key in somehow,
does it need to be pro or can it be home. Basically I'm
wondering if it's possible to take care of this without
having to do a clean install so I can keep all the files
and programs installed.

thanks for any advice, hope you understand my question

You'll need to purchase a "Full Retail Version"
of Windows XP Professional and proceed with
a "Repair Install". XP Home cannot be installed
over XP Pro.
