I have some similar files and would like to find out what the differences is
between them. Is there some sort of 'Differences' program/routine I can run
on them to determine the differences?

Provided that you're talking about text files: Start > Run: CMD > FC /?
Another option is "Windiff.exe" as part of the Support Tools (Win CD) or
downloaded from here: "Windows XP Service Pack 2 Support Tools"

What file extensions?
