Difference in VueScan Exposure Modes

Hi,
I'm scanning black and white (tmax400). I used advanced workflow in vusescan
to calc. the film emulsion. I notice when I open my levels in photoshop that
the same photo scanned using vuescan's auto exposure will produce a fatter
(on the y-axis) level histogram than when I use advanced workflow. Why is
this?
