dierctx 9.0 help

I cant seem to update to direct x 9 form 8.1 . I can
>download the file but when it installs I get an
>error . "direct x did not copy a required file" I treid
>downloading and installing 3 times . when I check direct
>x diagnostics I see three errors under the network tab
all with directplay8 1st , tcp/ip provider 2nd ,ipx
provider 3rd modem provider . It still shows as directx
versio 8.1 . When I restore to a time before the install
there are no errors in direct x diag . thanks
