Hello, and thank you for any help. Because of a power
failure (I suspect, anyway) my Windows 2000pro would not
boot up due to a corrupted file: system32
\config\software. Thanks to the advice elsewhere in this
forum, I was able to rename the file, then copy a
replacement out of the repair directory. I booted up, but
of course, everything is "gone." I didn't realize that it
would affect the My Documents folder also. I wanted to
rename the file from the repair directory then rename the
corrupt file back to the original, then run Norton while
windows was up. But I cannot rename it even after
installing Service Pack 4. So, can anyone offer a
suggestion as to how to get back to where I was before the
power failure? Or, where can I find all of my data?
Thank you very much.

It is unlikely you can repair your registry. As for your data it is
still in the same directories as it was before. You will just need to
reinstall the associated application to open the data files. The
software hive is what contains all the info on how to run each
application.

Thank you for your help. I appreciate it. My first
computer had a 20 mb hard drive shipped separately in the
box. But as the years went by, and I got busier and the
OS got better, I didn't have to know as much to make
things work. Now I am knowledgeable enough to be
dangerous. Thanks again.
