What I did to stop receiving the virus e-mails(and all spam) altogether

1) changed my regular e-mail address at the ISP
a) made sure it was NOT an old, unused address
b) made sure NO ONE knows the new address but me, my family, and my boss
2) falsified my e-mail address in my newsreader account settings
a) this includes both my primary address, or the return address (if
used)
3) falsified my e-mail address in all other e-mail account settings

I am now getting exactly ZERO false "Microsoft security" virus messages.
I am now getting exactly ZERO spams

That would work for a personal account but a business account should be
phased out more slowly.

but when my uncle got worm, it got my email addy from HIM.
mailto addys on webpages get spammed too.
I's only a matter of time.

Only way 2 be ~100% safe is to have disposable addy's &
never give REAL addy to anyone. MOM doesnt know mine!!

I avoided #1 by creating two Message Rules with the "not" option, obtaining
exactly how the wanted senders appeared in both From and Subject columns,
then entering and selecting "Delete from server", the last option in section
2 of the first Rules dialog box. This saved me having to notify everyone of
the change--and possibly giving out my new addy to the unwanted. Works like
a charm as I'm getting email pre-regular spam days.

Hi Larry,

If you don't give out your real email address to ANYONE, it sort of defeats
the purpose of e-mail, doesn't it?

Or....maybe you don't give your real addy to just your mom. :>

Well, lets see...
I can send e-mail to anyone I desire, anytime I desire, so the purpose of
e-mail is not being defeated by not giving out my address indiscriminately..

Perhaps you failed to read the part where I said "made sure no one knows
the new address *BUT* me, my family, and my boss". That means those I want
to know my address know it.

It appears, from your lack of understanding, that English comprehension is
no longer taught in school. Or maybe you were standing in the hallway,
smoking a joint, when your English class went over it.

I guess you just didn't see the "but". In case you didnt, here it is: (_|_)

Hi Alan

How 'disposable addy's' work is at www.mailshell.com
I've got 400 but no one knows my real 1(where all r
forwarded) - its nowhere in headers.

Can be a little challenging at 1st and cost $35/yr.
If ur interested, I know some that r $0 but have
limitations.

Donald McDaniel,

Speaking of comprehension skills, you obviously missed the part of my
message that started with the salutation "Hi Larry."

If I had been addressing you, I would have begun my message with "To
Asshole."

This system may eventually break down, because others will add your new email address to their Contacts or Address Book lists.* Some people do this automatically when they reply to one of your emails (they must have your genuine email address to reply).* When one of your trusted correspondants becomes the victim of a new worm/trojan/malicious web page, your email address will once again be in the public domain.* This may never happen, but I'm betting it will.
