did not load driver

Hi,

one important step in troubleshooting is to check if all components load
correctly during system startup. I repeatedly found drivers in ntbtlog.txt
what didn't load. Now I tried to find an explanation in the chapter
"Troubleshooting the Startup Process" of the Windows XP Resource Kit
(http://www.microsoft.com/germany/tec...c29621675.mspx).

There is only a very small paragraph dealing with this problem: "Windows XP
Professional records in a log, windir\Ntbtlog.txt, the name and path of each
file that runs during startup. The log marks each file as successful (Loaded
driver) or unsuccessful (Did not load driver). Boot logging appends entries
to Ntbtlog.txt when you start your system in safe mode." After some words
about safe boot the user is referred to the Help and Support Center: "For
more information about boot logging, see Windows XP Professional Help and
Support Center."

In the Help and Support Center I found only one entry telling me that I can
activate boot logging with F8 what I - of course - already did.

At next I took a closer look at some drivers. For NDProxy.SYS I read first
that this driver did load, the next entry tells me that it did not load. I
looked in the registry and found that the Start value is set to 3 (manual),
i.e. XP should not try to load this driver at all. But it tries to load it
nevertheless. Then I set the ErrorControl value to 1 expecting that an error
is logged to the event log. After a restart with logging enabled I again saw
that ntbtlog.txt tells me first that NDProxy.SYS loaded and then that it not
loaded and no entry was logged in the event log.

I also set ErrorControl of other drivers to 1 but nothing was logged in the
event log although the Start value was 1 and the driver did not load.

Does anybody know an explanation for that or at least some resources with
detailed information? Because sometimes MVPs are looking in this forum I want
ask Microsoft to provide some useful information about this topic, at least
in the mentioned chapter of the Windows XP Resource Kit. Help is very welcome.
