I am running win XP Pro with all updates.
When I hit ctrl-alt-del, the task manager button is grayed out.
If i try to run the task manager from a CMD, nothing happens.
The .exe is located in the proper place.

It's not unusual for viruses to block task manager and other things
you might use in combating them.

ctrl-alt-del should open Task Manager. I do not follow what you mean by
a button.

Try Ctrl+Shift+ Esc. Does that open Task Manager?

Another way to open Task Manager is to right click on the Tasbar and
select Task Manager.

Task Manager can be targetted by malware. What are your anti-virus and
anti-spyware arrangements?

Have a look in the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for
Errors and Warnings and post copies here. Don't post any more than 48
hours ago.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a

Download the free program "Hijackthis" . Not only is an aid in
determining if you have a virus; but it also has a tool that is similar
to task manager (under the mis. Tools Section) that you will be able to
run. Two other programs that I have used in the past to rid my computer
of nasties; is "Malwarebytes Anti-Malware" and "Combo fix". I find that
Combo fix does a real good job; however; you have to be careful when
using it.

You should put your advice directly to the person you want to receive
it. I assume your newsreader is capable of doing this. I am aware of the
capabilities of the programmes you mention. Whilst malware is a
possibility more information is needed first before going down that
road.
