I can no longer use to create a smiley face. The characters have
disappeared from my AutoCorrect list.
I tried to paste the character into the "With" dialogue box, but only get a
"J" character.
I tried to insert the character into the "With" dialogue box by using [ALT]
074, and still only get a "J" character.
I tried the [ALT] 074 in the document itself and still only got the "J"
character; I suspect this is not a Word problem.
I just tried the [ALT] 074 in Notepad and got a "J" character, as well.
So it's not Word, but maybe someone can still help me.

The character for the smiley face resides in the Wingdings font family.
After you type [Alt] 074, have you then selected the 'J' and changed the
font to 'Wingdings'?

Formatted AutoCorrect entries (which is what this is) are saved in
Normal.dot. My guess would be that you saved a document or another template
as Normal.dot, which wiped out all your AutoText and formatted AutoCorrect
entries. See http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/...ocNotBlank.htm for
instructions on renaming Normal.dot.

Formatted autocorrects are stored in normal.dot so missing entries is an
indication that you have tried to save a document as normal.dot. Only Word
can create normal.dot. Rename yours to oldnormal.dot and use the organizer
to copy your personalisations to the new one Word will create.

Thank you. You are absolutely right - I did replace my normal.dot file. My
customized toolbars disappeared a month ago and I tried to find an old
normal.dot (they seem to disappear on me about every 2-6 months).

The first responder's reply helped me to get the characters back in my
AutoCorrect table and normal.dot. Thank you for the article on working with
Normal.dot; I have printed it off and will be a better user for it.
