What Did I Do ?

I installed a new controller card and added a second hard
drive.

The 2 hard drives seem OK, however, my A drive is not
accessible, and, my cd burner only reads once per
session. If I reboot, I still can't access the A drive,
but I get once chance with the CD burner.

Did I do something wrong ?

Why did you have to install a controller card...?
Did you jumper the new drive..?

Most motherboards have two IDE channels to which you can attach four IDE
devices. Why the new controller card?

Hi -

Jumper settings are correct. I needed the new controller
card because of the number of devices..........2 HD's,
CDR-W, DVD,Zip Drive and of course the floppy.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

We need the controller used, the jumper setting, and the position on
the controller for each drive.

I would try the controller in a different slot.

Hi Trent -

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

It's an SIIG Ultra ATA133 controller card.

I've tried many different configurations to try to
resolve this. The current configuration is: The two
HD's (C & D - both Seagate) coming off the controler
card's first slot and the CDR-W (Sony - I've already
exhanged it to rule out a CDRW malfunction) coming off
the second slot of the controller card. The C HD is set
to master and everything else is set to Cable Select. Of
course the floppy is connected directly to the floppy
controller. I have temporarily disconnect the DVD and
the Zip to attempt to isolate the cause.

When I reboot, the CDR-W reads the CD ONCE. If open the
CDR-W and re-close it, it says the CD is blank.

I'll try any other configuration you suggest and I
appreciate any suggestions as this is driving me nuts !

Set the jumper on the other drive to slave instead of cs. Then turn
the controllers off on the mainboard...not just on the opening screen
to 'none'...but turn them OFF in the peripheral section.

See if that boots okay...then add drives one at a time from there.
Test each time. Don't forget that you'll need to turn the controllers
back on that you need on the mainboard.

Which is WHERE?

I'd dump that zip drive...just my personal opinion. More than likely,
its causing the floppy problem.

Move your letters down in Windows...W for any writer...R for any ROM.

I'd suggest running any boot optical drive from the master secondary
on the mainboard...and set your jumper accordingly.

I never use cable select. It often causes problems...especially for
folks who aren't sure of the kinda cable they have. And it slows down
the computer on boot.

If you need to write back, let us know what's working...and the
working configuration.

Good luck...let us know.

Have a nice week...

Trent
