Diconnecting USB Devices

Greetings,

I just purchased a Western Digital external hard drive.
The device connects via the USB port on my Compaq Armada
m700. For some reason, the double-arrows that represent
attached USB devices does not show up in my system tray.
Therefore, I have no safe way of disconnecting the
device. When I do pull out the device I get a message
saying to first shut down the servie. The text message
includes a check box to display connected USB devices. I
always click on this, but the items never show up in the
system tray. Any thoughts? How can I fix this? Thaks.

Doug
