I purchased DiamondMax 500GB drive and am having trouble installing it.
The following is my set up.

1) New drive to be installed as slave secondary storage.

2) Master drive has windows XP home with SP2 installed. I have also
run Maxtor Big Drive Enabler.

3) Mother board is by intel, model D850EMV2 with 850e chipset. I have
also installed the Intel Application Accelerator.

The bios still reads the drive at 137GB and when I run MaxBlast4 it
reads the disk at 137GB.

Is there anything else I can do to get this drive to work?

it is possible that a bios upgrade would help
after checking the intel site the board has had no support since 03 so good
luck.

I'm virtually certain your Intel motherboard supports large-capacity disks,
i.e., > 137 GB so there should be no problem there. No BIOS upgrade re that
function should be necessary.

I presume that when you installed that Maxtor HDD, your XP OS already
contained SP2, i.e., SP2 wasn't installed on your boot drive *after* you
installed the Maxtor HDD. That's right, isn't it? Because if it isn't you
may be dealing with a different problem.

You mentioned installing the Maxtor Big Drive Enabler". Assuming your
motherboard supports large-capacity disks (which it does) and your XP OS
contains SP1 and/or SP2 when you install the secondary HDD, there is no need
for that program to be used. Indeed, more times than not, these third-party
programs - even when they're from the manufacturer of the HDD - create more
mischief than capability. My advice is never to use them in an XP
environment.

There should be no reason that you need to use a controller card just to
have the system recognize the full-capacity of your secondary HDD.

Why don't you try this?

Using XP's Disk Management utility, delete the partition(s) on that Maxtor
HDD, then create one or more partitions on the disk and format same.

P.S.
I know I've worked with that board in years past. If memory serves me
correctly (which it doesn't always these days!) didn't that board use Rambus
memory? In all the years I've worked with PCs I never found more stable,
reliable RAM than RAMBUS. It's a real pity economic conditions were such
that it could no longer compete pricewise with newer types of RAM.

You're right the board does use Rambus RAM and I wish it was
cheaper. When I view the properties of the drive through the BIOS set
up it shows the properties of the drive as 137GB. Does this not mean
that the OS will only see the 137GB and the fix is needed on the
motherboard?

I've got an older Intel board than what you have and it supports
drives over 137GB. You say the BIOS reads the drive at 137GB?

Have you entered the CMOS setup program and ascertained that you have
turned on support for Large Hard Drives?

Also - and this is important! The Maxtor Drives are sometimes
jumpered at the factory locking the drive at 137GB. Make sure you've
read the instructions that came with the drive and have it jumpered to
give the full capacity.

I'm not entirely sure about this but I seem to recall there was a BIOS
element re that family of Intel motherboards that was called "LBA control
mode" (or something quite similar). The default was enabled. You might check
that out in your User's Manual. I don't recall any specific BIOS element
relating to large disk capacity support.

While I haven't worked with that Maxtor 500 GB HDD, I'm not aware of any
jumper setting limiting capacity to 137 GB on modern Maxtor HDDs. (There
might be a 32 GB limitation jumper setting).

Did you try using the XP Disk Management utility along the lines I
previously suggested? Same problem?
